Can Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension Replace a Single Torsion Axle on Tandem Axle Horse Trailer

Question:

I now have dual 3500 pound torsion axles On my Kiefer Built horse trailer. If I was to put on the axle- less axle system to replace my front damaged axle would I need to replace both front and rear axles or could I leave the one rear Undamaged axle as is?

It is possible to add the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # A35RS545 to your horse trailer in combination with one of your current torsion axles, but there are two important factors to consider before you do so.

You will want to take into account the distance from the center of the spindle to the trailer frame and the amount of deflection. For example, the # A35RS545 will put the center of the spindle 4" below the bottom of the frame when empty and it has a deflection of 1-3/4". The arms of your current torsion axles have one of several different starting angles and they typically have a deflection of approximately 3".

The best case scenario for adding the Timbren system is for your torsion arms have a starting downward angle of 45 degrees but you might be able to make it work if you have an angle of at least 22.5 degrees. If the angle is less than that, it would cause one axle to sit much taller than the other. To measure your torsion axles starting angle, you will want to jack up the trailer, remove the wheel, and check the angle of the torsion arm in relation to the bottom of the trailer frame. If this does not match up then your only option would be to replace both axles with the # A35RS545.
