Recommended Trailer Hitch And Towing Components For A 2013 Toyota RAV4 XLE
Question:
Hello there, I am looking to use my 2013 XLE Rav4 to tow the 4x8 U-Haul trailer. The trailers empty weight is 850 pounds. I am moving from Seattle to Phoenix. Would my Rav4 be able to tow a trailer this size with any of the hitches you have? If so what would be your recommendation for the hitch that I would need to buy. Thank you for your time I really appreciate it.

To start you'll definitely want a Class III hitch so that you can get a 2" receiver opening. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13406. This hitch is rated for up to 3,500lbs but you'll still need to follow the towing capacity of your 2013 Toyota RAV4 XLE. This fully welded trailer hitch receiver simply bolts onto your Toyota RAV4's frame with no drilling or welding required. It has a gloss black powder coat finish over protective base coat offers superior rust resistance for a long lifespan.
To tow that trailer you'll also need a wiring harness to transfer your braking and turning signals to the lights on the trailer. For this I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118578.
This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will need to remove some interior trim or carpeting to access the harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk or mounted it to the crossmember of the trailer hitch using parts # 18140 and # 18144.
You'll also need a ball mount kit to tow the trailer so I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches # 989900. This kit comes with a 1-7/8" hitch ball and 2" hitch ball to allow you to tow multiple trailers. It also has a rise of 1" or 3" and a drop of 2" or 4" to keep your trailer level while you tow.
