Why Would Truck Lose Trailer Brake Connection When Coupler Touches Hitch Ball
Question:
Just bought a 2022 Caliber deck over trailer new. Truck doesnt sense the brakes while trailer is on the ball. Raise the trailer off the ball and truck senses the brakes and I can adjust them.

This is a really interesting scenario but what it sounds like is that you have a short to the trailer frame that is passing through to your brake controller circuit when metal to metal contact is made between the hitch ball and the trailer coupler. This is most likely from the 12 volt accessory circuit shorting out to the trailer frame. If you had a circuit tester like # PTW2993 you touch the frame and see if it shows voltage.
The solution will be to go over the circuit looking for any obvious shorts and fix as needed. Things to look for are cut or exposed wiring that touches the frame specifically for the 12 volt circuit.
