Can the Vehicle Auxiliary Power Outlet be Used to Charge AGM Battery

Question:

I would like to charge an AGM battery from a cigarette lighter while driving. Do you have any products that would limit the current to 10 amps or less?

Expert Reply:

In order to charge your AGM battery using your vehicle I recommend the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Single Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 12 Amp # RED96FR. The the auxiliary power outlet in your vehicle is not designed to charge an AGM battery, and there is no product available that would allow for this.

The # RED96FR can be installed in your vehicle or on your trailer. It has a battery isolator function which prevents the charger from pulling power when the vehicle is off. It also uses a multi-stage charging algorithm to ensure a complete charge without overcharging. The fault recognition will prevent damage to batteries from voltage spikes, overheating, and reverse polarity connection.
