How to Calculate Tongue Weight and Does a Weight Distribution Hitch Change Tongue Weight Capacity

Question:

Hello, I have a ~220 lb motorcycle that I would like to bring with me on camping trips. Ideally, I would put it in front of a tear trailer that I am considering for purchase, but I am worried about the impact that would have on the tongue weight. The outback is rated for 200 lbs of tongue weight, and the tear trailer adds 130 lbs to the tongue. I suppose I have 2 questions: - Is there a way to calculate the additional tongue weight, based on distance from the added weight to the ball, and the position of the tear axle? - Would a weight distribution hitch resolve allow me to load the motorcycle? If so, how would the distribution hitch augment my max tongue rating? Any other solutions out there for this problem? Thanks!!!

In order to calculate the tongue weight of your trailer with the 220 lb motorcycle you would need to measure it. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of your loaded trailer weight. In this case, it will probably add quite a bit depending on how you are carrying the bike. Especially since you are planning to add it in front of the tear trailer. You may want to consider adding the # E-100 to the rear of your trailer if you have a 4" x 4" bumper. This wouldn't add nearly as much tongue weight.

In order to find your tongue weight you will need to use a scale like the # e99044. You can also use the bathroom scale method (see the attached article on determining trailer tongue weight). Using a scale will be the only reliable method when it comes to finding the tongue weight.

Regarding the weight distribution hitch, this may change the tongue weight capacity on your hitch depending on the hitch, but the vehicle stays the same. You will not be able to increase the maximum tongue weight of your vehicle by adding any equipment or suspension enhancement.
