Comparing the Blue Ox Patriot and the Brake Buddy Select 3 for the 2018 GMC Canyon

Question:

I’m having a hard time deciding between the Brake Buddy 3 or the Blue Ox Patriot brake systems on my 2018 GMC Canyon. With either system, I’ll have to install a separate power line to the battery since I have to disconnect the battery while towing per the owner’s manual. It appears that the Blue Ox system lets me adjust both the sensitivity and force while the Brake Buddy only has an adjustment for the sensitivity. Because of the extra settings, I’m leaning toward the Blue Ox system. Can you advise how well the remote settings of the Blue Ox system works? I’m also interested in finding out how much power the Blue Ox system draws from the battery? If I stop and recharge every 3 hours or so, do I still need to run a charge line?

This is a common question for those looking for a flat tow arrangement. The Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR and the Brake Buddy Select 3, # HM39524, are similar in their setup and functionality as each system is a portable proportional braking system that is compact and easy to install. In regards to functionality, we've seen some reports of the Patriot being a little bit slower in the response to the braking on their RV but I've not heard any feedback to issues with the remote display functionality. The warranty periods for these two products shows a great difference. The Brake Buddy comes with a 5 year warranty, whereas the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR is a 2 year warranty. So even though both are solid products with high reviews from their users, if there was an issue, you are covered for 2.5x longer with the Brake Buddy warranty.

The Brake Buddy Select 3 # HM39524 plugs into 12V accessory outlet or uses AA batteries. The power draw is 12VDC at 15 amps. Yes, if you stopped every 3-5 hours to top off the charge of your towed vehicle you would be fine. I do prefer to have the vehicle charge line installed though. I suggest the BrakeBuddy Towed Vehicle Battery Charge Kit, # BB54FR and the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Motorhomes, # RM-156-75.

According to Blue Ox, the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR draws .50 amp (half an amp) when plugged in. When activating the brakes it draws 1.50 amps. It will not drain the battery quickly providing you unplug when not in use.
