What Hitch Bike Rack Do You Recommend To Carry Two Bikes, An E-Bike And A Road Bike

Question:

I need a platform hitch bike rack that can accommodate an e-bike and a road bike. I want it to tilt so I can access the cargo area of a Toyota Highlander. What do you recommend?

This is something we can do for you. Your 2015 Toyota Highlander will have a maximum tongue weight of either 200 lbs or 500 lbs, depending on the trim level of your vehicle -- you can find that information in your owner's manual. Those totals will be the limiting factor on what hitch bike racks you can carry on your vehicle.

If your electric bike does not have fenders, I recommend a hitch bike rack that holds the bikes by the wheels. This type of rack will hold your bike without touching the frame of the bicycle, which is perfect for a bike with a step-thru frame. I am a fan of the Kuat NV 2.0 Base Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount - Matte Black, part # BA22B. It has a maximum weight limit of 60 lbs per bike. It weighs 52 lbs, so carrying to bikes, even if one is an e-bike, will not be a problem.

I have included a product description link, a video installation link of the Kuat NV being installed on a 2017 Toyota Highlander, and a video review of the Yakima OnRamp below.

Carrying an ebike with fenders will mean your hitch bike rack will have to clamp your frame to secure your bike to the rack. The Yakima OnRamp Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount, part # Y36FR, you attached to your question fits that bill. It has a weight limit of 65 lbs per bike. The OnRamp does come with a ramp to help you load your e-bike.

Each of these bike racks come with an anti-rattle device to eliminate the movement between the hitch receiver and the hitch bike rack. The bike racks can be locked to your vehicle and the bikes you are transporting can be secured to the rack. They have a tilt-down mast that can be utilized when the rack is carrying bikes or when empty, so you will always have access to the rear of your vehicle.
