What Maintenance Is Needed After Submersing Optronics Trailer Light # TL5RK in Salt Water
Question:
Can you suggest maintenance procedures after submerging the trailer lights in salt water?

Expert Reply:
The Optronics Submersible Trailer Light Kit # TL5RK is designed to withstand immersion in water, including salt water. So unless one of the tail or marker light units were damaged (which could allow water to enter the light housing) the only regular maintenance step that might be advisable is a thorough rinse with fresh water to remove salt build up, just as you would for your boat.
Also, these units use a mounting post that also serves as a ground connection. As a periodic precautionary measure, perhaps seasonally, you can remove the 4 fixtures to allow you to clean the mounting/ground posts. A fine wire brush, such as # DW00254, may best serve this purpose. At that time, you can also apply a thin coating of dielectric grease, such as part # PTW2993. Dielectric grease will help to prevent entry of moisture and prevent corrosion.
The 4-pole connectors will also benefit from a periodic cleaning and application of dielectric grease to help keep water out of the connections.
