Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible

Question:

I read that the Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier - Trunk Rack will not fit VW New Beetle Convertibles correctly. I dont have a hitch or the feasibility of installing one. Is the aforementioned Thule rack fully compatible with my type of vehicle, without damaging the soft-top material or frame? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

In order to carry bikes on a 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle convertible you will need to install a trailer hitch because there are no trunk mount or roof rack options for the convertible models. I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24679. This is a Class I trailer hitch so you will need a rack that is Class I compatible and you are limited to a maximum of 2 bikes.

For a compatible bike rack I recommend the Swagman Titan, # S63400. It features anti-sway cradles, an integrated cable lock, the ability to tilt down, and it has a rise in the shank for additional ground clearance. I have included some links on the hitch installation and a review of the rack for you.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical mens bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wifes bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my sons bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
