Roof Cargo Basket Solution for 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5

Question:

Im only interested in strapping 2 - 3 G.I. green canvas ruck sacks onto the roof of my 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5 Limited to gain a little more room. I dont want to use the factory bars alone or tie it to the roof, the metal buckles or hardware if moving in the wind can scratch the roof, prefer strapping the ruck sacks to a roof basket so it can be tied down properly. The factory cross bars are oval shaped. Nearly all the mounting brackets for cargo baskets I see are flat. That looks like a good recipe for dented or bent factory cross bars. Does anyone make oval mounting brackets that fit the Subaru factory cross bars properly? Or are Subaru owners supposed to ignore the factory cross bars and buy aftermarket cross bars? Or am I supposed to make my own mounting brackets bent to the shape of the factory bars using rubber covered aluminum bar stock and bolts? How do most people mount cargo baskets on Subaru roofs?

I checked with Yakima and they have all of their roof baskets listed as a fit for the factory crossbars of your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon so you could use the Yakima Offgrid # Y07138 directly with the bars you have now. This is a very common solution for owners of Outbacks like yours.

Or if you wanted to add a set of crossbars that would sit up taller you could use the Malone AirFlow 2 part # MPG216.
