Question:

Can you tell me what sort of rack I would need with a Bike E recumbent bike on a 2005 Toyota Rav4?

To carry a recumbent style of bike you will need to use a hitch mounted bike rack that holds the wheels of the bike. I recommend either the Saris Freedom # SA4412B-R or the Swagman XC-Extended Bike Rack # S64650-EXT, for carrying your Bike E recumbent bike on your Toyota Rav4.

My research shows that a Toyota Rav4 could have a Class I, or Class III hitch installed on it, so depending on your current hitch on your Toyota Rav4 you could either have a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening or a 2 inch receiver opening. These bike racks would fit either with an included adapter. If you do not already have a hitch installed on your Toyota Rav4 I would recommend the Curt Class III # C13524 with a 2 inch receiver opening.

The choice between the Saris Freedom # SA4412B-R or the Swagman XC-Extended Bike Rack # S64650-EXT will depend on the weight of your bike and the length of the wheelbase of your bike.

The Saris Freedom # SA4412B-R will hold bikes will carry bikes up to 35 pounds on a Class 1 hitch using the 1-1/4" hitch or up to 60 pounds using the 2" hitch. It will accommodate wheel bases up to 5 inches.

The Swagman XC-Extended Bike Rack # S64650-EXT will carry bikes up to 35 pounds with a max wheelbase of 69 inches.

If you want to secure this bike rack to your vehicle and the bikes to it the Hollywood racks anti-rattle hitch lock and cable lock # HRLHPTC is available.

Whichever bike rack you choose please check the tongue weight of both your Toyota Rav4 as well as the tongue weight of your hitch and do not exceed the lowest of the two ratings.
