Recommendations For Reducing Sag In A 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 When Pulling A Travel Trailer

Question:

Hi, I just got a 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 and I'm looking at a 13,500 pound (fully loaded) travel trailer. I have a weight distribution system picked out and ready to go, but I am concerned about the back of the truck sagging after hooking this up. My wife and I are not full time travelers, but we do take a few serious trips 2 to 3 times a year that are up to, if not a little over, 1,000 miles per trip. So my question is, should I put something back there to supplement the factory suspension? And if so, what do you recommend? I really like the stock ride of this truck and would hate to mess it up, but let me know what you think. Thanks.

We definitely have what you are looking for! I can start off by saying the Reese Strait-Line # RP66075 would have been the weight distribution system I would have suggested, so you are definitely good there. With that said, you are correct in that you can still get a good amount of sag, even when a system like this is used.

What I recommend doing is adding the Firestone Ride-Rite Red Label Extreme Duty Air Helper Springs # F2709. You are getting pretty close to your truck's max capacity for a bumper pull travel trailer, so I do suggest going with the heavy duty option. These are rated up to 7,500 pounds of load leveling capacity at 150 psi and will definitely help get rid of any sag you experience. One of the huge pluses with an air bag kit is that when not in use, you can deflate them down to 5 psi and return you back to that stock ride feel. This is one of the big reasons I recommend them.

One potential add on will be a compressor unit, like the Firestone Air Command II # F2168. This will allow you to inflate and deflate the bags on the fly and not rely on an external air compressor source. It is also dual path, which means you can fill one side more than the other if you ever need to. It is an expensive add on for sure, but it is also a nice thing to have.
