Swagman Quad Bike Rack for 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Question:

Hi, We were looking for a 4 bike platform carriers. It looks like the Quad has extra features and some items like cable locks and anti rattle pins. Is there anything else needed for this carrier? Otherwise, I would be tempted to go with the xtc. Thanks

The Swagman Quad Bike Carrier you referenced, part # S64FR and the Swagman XTC4, # S64665 include everything necessary to carry your bikes, including the anti-rattle hitch lock and braided steel cable lock to deter theft. You should need nothing else to carry your bikes.

I would recommend taking a quick bumper clearance measurement to make sure the racks will be fully compatible with your vehicle. Measure the distance from the hitch pin hole rearward to the point where you clear the rear bumper. (See the FAQ article I have linked you to.) The Quad 4 requires that this measurement be less than 9 inches to be able to install and fold up flat against the rear of the vehicle. The XTC 4 will only fold up into the storage position if this dimension is less than 3 inches.

If the measurement checks out, either rack would be a great choice for you and will work very well.

The primary difference between the two is the higher weight capacity of the Quad 4, 45 lbs max per bike versus 35 lbs per bike for the XTC4. There are other differences. The Quad 4 can handle tires up to 3 inches wide, while the XTC4 is limited to tires up to 2-1/2 inches in width. The straps that hold the wheels are also a bit more robust and easier to use on the Quad 4 model. The Quad 4 weighs just a bit less than 80 lbs, while the XTC weighs around 60 lbs.

In addition to the FAQ article I mentioned earlier, I have also linked you to the installation/user instructions for both racks.
