Do I Need a Weight Distribution Hitch for a 3500 lbs Trailer and a 2017 Toyota Sienna?
Question:
Hello, we own a 2017 Toyota Sienna. We have Curt trailer hitch installed that says on it: 3500 lb GROSS TRAILER WEIGHT 350 TONGUE WEIGHT 5000 lb WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION 500 lb WD TONGUE WEIGHT We just bought a small camper trailer Riverside White Water 155 that is 14.5foot long with a dry weight according to the seller of 1850 lb. The camper says on it: GVWR 3500 LB Weight of the cargo should never exceed 1505 lbs So we are wondering about the tongue weight. From what I read, tongue weight can be 10-20 of trailer weight, so if it is ~10 we are good, but if it is around 20, then we are exceeding the tongue weight rating of our hitch. Should we get a weight distribution hitch? If we did, then Im thinking we would be good since it will be well under the 500 lb limit. Do they make WD hitches compatible with the trailer hitch we have? Im assuming yes since the trailer hitch has specifications for one on it. Or is our camper too small for this? If we do get one, should it be the 500 lb size? But! we have not measured the tongue weight. I was debating buying the Sherline trailer tongue weight scale to see if we exceed 350 lb tongue weight and then go from there, but wanted to see what you guys recommend - if you recommend just getting a WD hitch instead then we will do that. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the pictures! It sounds like you would benefit from having a weight distribution system and all of your components are compatible with one. I recommend the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution item # BXW0556. This is a clamp on system that requires no drilling into your trailer's frame to attach the hanger brackets. The built in sway control will keep your trailer in line with your 2017 Toyota Sienna when you're driving down the highway and get passed by a semi. It has a 6,000 lbs gross trailer weight and a 550 lbs tongue weight so you will be within your maximum weight range but not too overrated for an uncomfortably stiff ride.
