Why Wont My 5/8 Anti-Rattle Pin Fit In A Draw-Tite Class III Hitch?

Question:

I bought a softride anti-rattle locking pin for the hitch listed in the subject header. The pin shank is too large 5/8 for this hitch. Appears as though the hitch takes a 1/2inch shaft pin. The locking pin description clearly indicates it will fit this size/class hitch. Whats going on? I can not find any specs for the pin hole diameter for this hitch. Ive bought 5 or 6 hitches from you all over the years and this is the first issue. Thanks

The standard pin for a Class III hitch, like the Draw-Tite # 76227, will have a 5/8" diameter. Draw-Tite hitches are unique though, and actually have 2 holes on the ends of their receivers. This is to allow for the Tow Ready J-Pin Stabilization Pin and Barrel Lockset 63201. I included a diagram of how this pin will install, but basically the main 5/8" pin will go through the larger pin hole and the smaller pin hole will have the end of the pin press against the accessory when tightened down (the diagram and included video explains this better).

With that being said, I think what you may be doing is trying to install your Softride anti-rattle pin in the smaller front pin hole. This smaller hole will always be closer to the receiver opening, so try moving back from there a little, an inch at most, to see if there is a larger hole for the 5/8" pin to go through.

I do also need to mention that the pin for your Swagman XC2 Bike Rack # S64650 will have a 1/2" diameter. Since this rack can be used with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches, it will have a smaller pin than what is typically used for the 2" hitches. If you were wanting to lock your bike rack to the hitch, you will need the Locking Anti-Rattle, Threaded Hitch Pin for Swagman # S64029 as this is designed for use on their racks that can be installed in 1-1/4" and 2" hitches.
