Why Can't Sidewinder be Used with Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch

Question:

I’m looking at a BandW companion 5th wheel hitch. I have a 2018 F250 with the BandW gooseneck under bed option. My camper has the Reese sidewinder. I’ve read on your site comments that you can’t use the sidewinder with the companion hitch that plugs into the gooseneck ball. My question is, why can’t I use the sidewinder with this option?

The reason a Sidewinder can't be used with the Companion hitches that attach to the truck with a gooseneck ball is because of the additional torque and stress a Sidewinder puts on the hitch compared to a standard pin box since the pivot point is in a different location on the trailer frame. One easy option though is you an lock out the Sidewinder and not use a wedge which essentially turns it into a standard pin box which you can use with the Companion hitch.

You would need two 3/4” – 10 X 5-1/2" bolts, matching nuts, 4 flat washers, 2 lock washers all rated Grade 5 or better to lock out the Sidewinder. Which insert up through the bottom at the turret to prevent it from swiveling at the turret.
