Wiring A 3rd Brake Light For An ARE Camper Sheller For A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Question:

Im wiring a third brake light on the back of a camper top that does not have one. It is on my 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500hd. Can I wire it to the brake blade wire on my 7 way plug, or do I need to connect it to the light blue CHSTML wire on the auxiliary wiring setup above the spare tire? Im eventually going to mount a backup camera for the 23 trailer I am eying.

You are correct, some GM trucks had a blunt cut wiring harness already installed in the truck for a camper shell wiring. That is the light blue wire tucked up above the spare tire like you mentioned. That light blue wire is the wire that feeds the 3rd brake light on the back of the cab.

You may want to confirm first by cutting it, and stepping on the brake pedal, if the 3rd brake light does not turn on, then it's the right one.

You also, might have to run an independent ground, it will depend on if the camper shell has a good metal to metal contact with the truck or if it is already fitted for a ground wire for the light.
