Recommendation For What 5th Wheel/Sidewinder Combination Will Fit 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 5-1/2ft Bed

Please help me understand which 5 th wheel hitch for my truck is the best way to go.i know I need to use a sidewinder on my trailer, but do I use a stationary or glider hitch in my truck box. And where is it installed center of axle or how far in front. This system will not hit the back of my truck ? . Thank you very much. 2012 dodge crew cab 5.5 ft box

Because your 2012 Dodge Ram has a 5-1/2 ft bed, in order to tow a camper you will need to have a 5th wheel hitch as well as a Sidewinder installed. A sliding 5th wheel hitch has a 12 inch clearance when in the tow position and can interfere with your tailgate. The Sidewinder has a 22 inch clearance when in the tow position and when used in combination with a stationary 5th wheel hitch will not interfere with your tailgate and will enable you to make sharp turns.

The formula to calculate this measurement is listed on the Sidewinder FAQ article I attached about 1/2 down the page. This formula will also be able to tell you whether or not your camper will come into contact with your truck.

The 5th wheel installation is typically about 1 inch in front of the axle in the bed of your truck.

I have two recommendations for a 5th wheel hitch for your 2012 Dodge 5-1/2 ft bed truck. Depending upon your tow weight capacity needed, I recommend either the Reese 20K Hitch # RP30928 or if you can get by with less, I recommend the Reese 16K Hitch # RP30047. The installation kit is the same for both hitches being the Reese # RP30035-386. The installation kit comes with the rails and necessary hardware.
