Is it Dangerous to Exceed the Tongue Weight on a 2015 Nissan Rogue SL.
Question:
The tongue weights on the hitches you sell for my vehicle range between 300 and 525 lbs., but the tongue weight on my vehicle says the max is 100 lbs. Is it DANGEROUS if I put 300 lbs on my carrier if the carrier weighs +/- 125 lbs and the scooter weighs +/- 160 lbs, TOTAL +/- 285 LBS? tHANKS

Expert Reply:
Although a hitch like the Curt # C13204 has a maximum tongue weight of 525 lbs you are limited by the 100 lb tongue weight of your vehicle. Trying to carry your scooter and its carrier could result in various problems since you would be 200 lbs over the capacity of your 2015 Nissan Rogue SL.
The hitch may rip off of your vehicle since your vehicle isn't designed to carry that much weight. It could also overload your rear tires, making it difficult to control your vehicle and also brake. If any of this resulted in an accident or other damage it is safe to assume you would be held liable since you knowingly exceeded the manufacturer's capacity. In other words, yes, it is dangerous and not advised.
