Recommendations for Adding a 2k Trailer Axle to a Fabricated Frame

Question:

Hello, I am fabrication a trailer that is 60 inches wide. Its a 5x10. I am planning on mounting 15 inch tires. The trailer frame is for a tear camper and will weight 1300lbs at most. can you recommend an axle that will fit the size of my frame? I would also like to add brakes to the axle. Im just not sure what size length would be best for the frame. thanks in advance for your help!

We have a couple different options available for your trailer that you are building. The first will be a standard axle set-up.

The Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles - 72" Long - 2,200 lbs # T20BTR-EZ-7258 will measure 58 inches from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other. This should work perfectly fine with your 60 inch wide frame, but you will need to add the Brake Mounting Flange for 1-3/4" Round Trailer Axles - 2K # 4-34 onto the axle as it is not set up for brakes. The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # 23-47-48 will then bolt onto this plate. From here, the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 7" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # 8-257-5UC3-EZ will complete this axle.

However, you could also check out the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - Straight Spindle - Regular Tires - 2,000 lbs # ASR2KHDS01. This will bolt directly to the frame and the distance between the frame will not matter. This makes them a lot more adaptable and as they do not have a bar going across the frame, you will have independent suspension. This also has brake mounting flanges pre-installed, so the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K # 23-468-469 can be bolted straight on. The etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K will then complete this set up if you choose to go with it.

You will of course need some other odds and ends like wire, leaf springs, hangers, and shackles, but all this will depend on which way you choose to go and where things will be mounted.
