Can Higher Load Range Tire Be Used as Spare Tire

Question:

My boat trailer has Load Star 5.70-8 tires Load Range C - 6PR Max Load 910 lbs at 75 psi on 5 lug rims. The rim is stamped 910 lbs. Max Load. I need to buy a spare tire and wheel and was considering buying a Load Range D tire with an eye toward upgrading the current tires to D range as they need replacement. I would like to continue using the same rims is possible. My trailer is is a single axle and the load is a ComPac 16 1100 lbs dry weight. So Ive got a couple of questions. Can I use my existing wheels for Load Range D tires? If I needed to use the D range spare, would there be potential problems with using a C and D? And last, given that the wheel is Max Load 910 lbs, is putting a load range D tires on it just wasted capacity? Thank you.

You can absolutely continue using your existing wheels if you upgrade to a higher load range tires. As long as you don't exceed the 910 lb per tire/1820 lb per axle capacity of the wheels, you'll be just fine.

If you wanted to use the # AM30155 as a spare tire, that would work fine. You want to run tires that all have the same load range, but if you use the Load Range D tire as a temporary spare only until you can get the load range C tire repaired or replaced you'll be just fine.
