Should Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller # 90195 Be Reprogrammed to Install in 2012 Dodge Ram 1500
Question:
I purchased the P3 for my 2012 Ram 1500 Big Horn. Installation is a breeze, but i am unsure if i need to have the flash programming updated because of the aftermarket product? I have not yet tested with the trailer, but will in next few days. Also, will the Tekonsha work properly if i simply place it in the existing cubbyhole instead of mounting it permanently? the controller fits in the hole nicely, and id like to avoid mounting it permanently on the lower steering column bezel putting holes in it etc if not necessary. i plan on removing the brake controller from the vehicle when not towing etc.

Your Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 will only cause you to re-program your 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Big Horn if you had a factory brake controller installed and then added the P3 later. The OEM controller would have to be turned off by re-programming the computer. If your truck did not have a factory controller and has a factory 7-Way, you will have no problem.
I have provided a link to a video showing the typical installation of this product and a link to the installation instructions.
Regarding the placement of your P3, the front-to-back placement can be done at any angle, but the side-to-side angle must be perfectly horizontal and placed in the direction of travel. You can place the brake controller in the cubby but keep in mind if the controller becomes dislodged it will not work correctly.
