Yakima HoldUp or Saris Freedom 4-Bike Rack For Two Townie Original 7D EQ Step-Thru Bikes

Question:

I have a 2009 Tacoma 4 door with after market 2” hitch. I’m looking for a bike rack for 2 bikes with an add on for 4. I have 2 7D EQ STEP THRU with FENDERS. 26” wheels, 46” wheel base and approx 35 lbs. The 2 other bikes I don’t have info on but the main bikes are the Townies. I’m stuck between the Yakima HoldUp or the Saris Freedom 4 bike. One of your videos steered me away from the Hollywood model? I ALSO prefer NOT to have to use any adapter bars as all bikes are women’s. Thank you for you help.

So this really depends on how important having the 2-bike add-on (or having the ability to turn the 4-bike rack into a 2-bike rack) is. If that's something that is a requirement for the rack, then the only option is the Yakima Holdup 4-Bike Rack # Y02443-2. The reason for that is the Holdup has the ability to convert into a 2-bike rack, while the Freedom does not. The Holdup is a quality rack that holds the bikes by the tires so you would not need adapter bars. The Holdup could interfere with bikes with fenders, though. Another plus for the HoldUp would be the fact that it includes locks for both the hitch and the bikes. The HoldUp measures 12" from the hitch Pin hole when the rack is in use and then 7" when the rack is folded. It weighs 98 pounds.

However, if you are okay with having a 4-bike rack at all times then, there are a couple of benefits of going with the Saris Freedom # SA4414B. First, it has a lower price point, and second it offers more clearance. It has 13-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole when in use and 10" when folded. This might be important if you take the measurements on your vehicle. You would not need adapters with the Saris Freedom, just like with the Yakima Holdup, but the Saris would need locks purchased separately with the parts # SA3022 for the hitch lock and # SA981 for the cable lock. This rack is lighter, weighing 53 pounds.

In summary, these are both great racks and I would be proud to own either:

Choose the Yakima Holdup # Y02443-2 if you would have plenty of clearance with the 12" and 7 inches, don't have fenders on any of your bikes, and don't mind spending the extra dollars to get the quality.

Choose the SarisFreedom # SA4414B if you need the extra clearance, don't mind always having it set up as a 4 bike, and would like to save some money even after purchasing the extra two locks.

Both videos are attached to help you make your final decision.
