Can Power Wire For 4-way Connector 118754 Be Used As Power Wire For 7-way Connector As Well?

Question:

I installed a 4 pin trailer harness part 118754 and now need to upgrade to a 7 pin. Can I tap into the existing power cable I ran for the 4 pin or do I need to run two separate cables to the battery? Seems redundant to have 2 lines to the battery

I would be happy to help!

While it seems redundant, you will need to run an additional power line from your new 7-way connector to the positive terminal of your vehicle's battery.

The reason for this is the power wire you ran for the Tekonsha T-One Connector # 118754 is to power the lights and keeps from pulling power from your vehicle's light circuits.

The power wire for the 7-way connector is for the 12v auxiliary power pin, and needs its own dedicated circuit like it would have in a vehicle with a factory 7-way connector.

If you have not already decided on which 7-way connector to install I recommend the # ETBC7 as it includes everything you need to get the 7-way installed. This will plug directly into your 4-way connector and only require a few more connections. The black wire will get run to the positive terminal of your battery with the included 40 amp circuit breaker, the white wire will get grounded to the frame of your vehicle, and the blue wire will get run underneath the dash where your trailer brake controller will be installed. If you are not needing a trailer brake controller right now I recommend still running the blue wire, but just bundling it under the dash so it is there if needed in the future.

If you also need a trailer brake controller I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 as it is an extremely reliable controller with great features like an easy to read LCD screen, and built in diagnostics that are easy to read and understand. This controller is proportional meaning its built in inertia sensor detects the intensity you applied the brakes to your vehicle, and sends the same braking intensity to your trailer brakes for smooth, controlled braking.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
