Choosing Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 1992 Salem Trailer and 2003 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Just recently purchased a 1992 Salem travel trailer and am trying to determine what system I need to purchase for the vehicle I will be towing it with. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing you are going to want to do is check the hitch for a sticker that will tell you if the hitch is rated for weight distribution. Then consult the vehicle owners manual to make sure it can be used with weight distribution.
To determine the best system for your trailer you will need to calculate the total tongue weight. Do this by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and add to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I have included a link to an FAQ article to help you determine the tongue weight.
Once you know the tongue weight I can help you pick out a system that will work best for you.
For sway control there are different types. I recommend dual-cam sway control like what you have referenced because it works to keep the vehicle and trailer in a straight line rather than trying to stop sway after swaying has already started. There are several systems that include dual-cam sway control. I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution for you as well.
