If you have rusted running boards, one labor-intensive option is to remove the bars and sand them until the rust comes off then polish the steel. However, it is still possible that the rust will return. It is especially difficult to stop rusting after it begins. If your brackets are rusted through, you will need to replace the brackets. If you have the make and model of your running boards, I would happy to assist you in finding replacements if you provide that information.
Fortunately, there are options of replacement running boards for your 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. For a great set of economical running boards, I recommend the Aries Round Nerf Bars - 3" Diameter - Polished Stainless Steel # AA203010-2. The great thing about the Aries Round Nerf Bars is that they are constructed with mirror-polished 304 rustproof stainless steel. In addition, the nerf bars come with all mounting hardware for a drill-free installation.
