Recommended Wiring And Brake Controller For a 2014 BMW X1 Pulling a 1990 Scamp Travel Trailer
Question:
Hi Friends! Im trying to find the correct 7-pin wiring harness to install on my 2014 BMW X1 so that I can tow my 1990 16foot Scamp Trailer with 7 pin connector and electric breaks and also hoping that I can get away with a wireless break controller or if there is a better option. Will the trailer breaks work without a break controller? Will the trailer breaks work with a 4-pin wiring harness connected to the 7-pin on the trailer via adapter? If so, which adapter do I need? Ive searched your site, but cannot find which 7 pin wiring harness kit to purchase. I dont believe a 4 pin wiring harness adapted to a 7 pin plug on the trailer will give me the electric trailer breaks. Thank you a bundle for any insight you can offer!

I recommend the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT to give you the lights that you need for towing your 1990 Scamp with your 2014 BMW X1. To this you will add the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L to convert the 4-way flat to a 7-way blade connector. It will also give you a 40-amp circuit breaker and wiring needed to run a charge line to the battery on your BMW.
The Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 will then allow you to control the trailer brakes on your Scamp wirelessly. It works by sending power from the charge line circuit of the 7-way to the brake circuit when the brake lights are activated. For this reason you must remember to not use you emergency flashers with the Echo installed, if you did the brakes would activate every time the lights flash.
You must have a brake controller to be able to operate the brakes on the Scamp.
