Question:
As far as opening the trunk lid of the Highalander, is it possible to do so when the cargo carrier is slid away?

When the GearDeck 17 # H00604 is installed on your Highlander, the closest edge of the box is 14 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole. Then the box portion will slide and additional 50 inches straight back. You can use these measurements to determine if opening the rear hatch will be a problem.
I have another option for you. The Yakima EXO # Y62VR enclosed carrier swings away the vehicle ensuring that you could open your hatch. You will still need to measure if it will fit. The closest edge of the # Y62VR will be 4-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole. You will need to see if this will clear your bumper.
You would need to have a 2-inch trailer hitch to use either of these carriers. I have included some links on installation and a video review of each rack for you to learn more.
