Brake Controller Installed on 2013 Toyota Highlander Still Powered Up With Ignition Off

Question:

I’ve installed the Tekonsha P2 on my vehicle using the universal installation kit ETBC7. This is a used vehicle so a Curt 4 pin connector with an under dash module were already there. Following your instructions and videos, I’ve finished the install. It did power up and it worked fine when connected to my trailer. The concern I have is that it powered up without turning the key in the ignition. It is powered all the time. Won’t this be a constant drain on the battery? Did I connect something incorrectly? Can I get it to power up when I turn the ignition key only? Thanks.

You've installed everything correctly. The brake controller is intentionally wired directly to the battery, so there's no chance the user will forget to turn it on. This is done as a safety measure, and it's not recommended to install it any other way.

Once the controller is motionless for 15 or so minutes, the controller goes into a sleep mode, during which time the controller draws a miniscule amount of power. In order for the controller to discharge the battery, the vehicle would need to be left unattended for months on end.

If it makes you feel better, you can certainly unplug the harness from the rear of the controller when it's not being used, but the danger there is forgetting to plug it back in later.
