A sliding 5th wheel hitch is used for short bed trucks to provide that needed cab clearance when making tight turns. The hitch will slide back toward the tailgate. The other option is to have a fixed hitch but replace the pin box on the 5th wheel with a rotating turret type, such as the sidewinder, # RP34FR.

You already stated you are looking at the B&W hitch and that you want the rock solid opinion. Then the B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider, # BWRVK3270 is my suggestion. Checkout the attached product review and installation video. B&W builds one of the most solid hitches you can purchase, made right here in the USA with material sourced from the US too, quality materials and workmanship in their builds.

The built-in slider on this sturdy 5th-wheel hitch helps eliminate clearance concerns during slow-speed turns and the dual jaws offer a secure connection. This is compatible with all industry-standard, above-bed rails. This is an 18K hitch with a vertical load limit of 4,500 lbs. and a full 12" of slide. The 3/4" thick jaw on the Patriot is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection with polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable tow. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking.
