Importance of GVWR and Trailers Dry Weight When Choosing Between Trailers

Question:

My vehicle has a tow capacity of 5000lbs. We are looking at getting a small bumper trailer and I am confused if I should be looking at the gvwr on the trailer or the dry weight?

You'll want to look at the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) which is the maximum amount the trailer plus its cargo can weigh. If you subtract the trailer's dry weight from the GVWR, you'll get the maximum weight of the cargo you can load on the trailer. Knowing both weights plus having a good idea of what you're going to load on the trailer and its weight is very important.

For instance, the Detail K2 trailer you'd looked at, part # K2MMT5X7 has a GVWR of 2090 and a dry weight of 450 lbs. If you subtract the two, you get the payload rating, 1640 lbs which is the maximum amount of weight the trailer can safely carry.
