The first place to look when you're wanting to tow your vehicle is always the owner's manual. It takes all the guess work out and will give you step by step instructions to get your vehicle ready to tow if applicable. As for a Jeep Cherokee you will need the "ActiveDrive II" transfer case to be able to flat tow.
If your Jeep Cherokee can be flat towed you'll need a tow bar, tow bar wiring kit, base plate, braking system, and safety cables. If you can reply back with the year of your Jeep Cherokee I can provide recommendations for those items.
