Recommended Weight Distribution With Sway Control For Trailer With 3,500 lb Axle

Question:

I have a Trail Master 6x12 pipe top with dovetail and 5000 lb bulldog hitch. The stickers have sun faded and I cannot determine anything except I know the axle is rated for 3500 lbs. Trying to determine which anti-sway weight distribution device I should use and it would need to have a 2 inch ball. Im probably maxing out my tow capacity loading it with around 2000 lbs and it sways back and forth when driving over 50 mph. However, I do not know the tongue weight or the max capacity since I cannot read the manufacturers sticker. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

You provided plenty of good info there, and based on that we can get you the right weight distribution system with sway control. What you need with a weight distribution hitch is one in which your loaded tongue weight is in the range of the weight distribution hitch's tongue weight capacity. Based on your trailer having a 3,500 lb axle and the amount you are loading it, and some research on how heavy these trailers are, I am confident you will have a loaded tongue weight in the 400 lb range. Based on that I highly recommend going with an option from Blue Ox:

- Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BLU36FR

This TrackPro # BLU36FR is for loaded tongue weights between 200 lbs and 600 lbs, which should be the exact range your loaded tongue weight is in. I really like this system for a number of reasons, starting with the fact that it has superior sway control at both the hitch head and brackets, which is better than other systems that just offer control at the brackets.

This hitch is also the easiest system to set up with brackets that just clamp on and a hitch head that you don't have to continually adjust, which is something that a lot of other hitches require. It also comes with everything you need for installation, including a 2" hitch ball so you don't have to purchase one separately, like you do with most systems.

So for a weight distribution hitch that is going to give you the smoothest, most controlled ride, is the easiest install, and has the right capacity, the best option is absolutely going to be the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BLU36FR.
