Should Rusty Leaf Springs On Tilting Single Axle Boat Trailer Be Replaced?
Question:
I have a continental single axle boat trailer. The tilt model. I am having the trailer re-galvanized, and thought I would take this opportunity to replace the springs. Im not even sure they NEED replaced, but they are very rusty. Now, I have had the trailer sand blasted, and the springs LOOK much better! But, SHOULD I replace them? They are the slipper type, 23 inches hanger eye bolt center to slipper bolt center. They are 1 3/4 inches wide, and there are a total of four leaves each side. The boat in question weighs right at 1500 pounds + plus the trailer itself. Minus fuel - at 30 gallons gas so - I assume going ahead with re-galvanizing with the springs attached is a bad idea, and Im sure the rust will return if I dont do SOMETHING. My thoughts are to replace, probably with lighter service springs as my boat is not that heavy. My axle is not round, but square - 1.5inch X 1.4375 If you agree replacement is in order, how do I find them?

If the slipper springs currently on your boat trailer are not flat and seem to be in good shape other than the rust, there is no reason to replace them. Since you had them sand blasted I would just paint them with spray paint to keep them from rusting again.
If you would rather go ahead and replace them, or if they are flat then you will need to replace them.
Since you mentioned that the distance between the hangers on center is 23" then you likely have a spring in the 24-25" range but we do not have any slipper springs that have the correct capacity in that length.
Before having the trailer galvanized I would the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for 1-3/4" Slipper Springs # APS3SE installed in the correct location to use the 3-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Flat End for 2,900-lb Trailer Axles - 30" Long # SP-039275 installed.
These springs have a 2900lb combined capacity, so this should be just about perfect for your 1500lb boat plus the weight of the trailer.
I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
