Should Self Tappers be Used to Attach E-Track to an Aluminum Trailer

Question:

I have a new aluminum cargo trailer with 3/8inch plywood over 1 x 1-1/2inch aluminum framing. The aluminum tubular frame wall is only 1/16inch thick. I just tried installing the E Track taking it slow and eazy with the following results 1 1/4-14 x 1-1/4inch self tapping hex washer head screws: Went thru like butter and spun. No torque. 2 1/4-20 x 1-1/4inch - Stepped up to a self threading screw. snugged down a little but, torqued slightly then stripped. My experience above gave extreme negative results that would not hold with 20 TPI or under. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you.

Aluminum is a pretty soft metal. Especially as thin as you mentioned. I wouldn't recommend self tappers for the e-track. Instead I would recommend appropriately sized nuts and bolts on either side of the track with larger washers.
