Can I Put A Roof-Top Tent on a 2014 Ford Edge?

Question:

Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me clarify what I would need or if it is even possible to mount a roof top tent onto my 2014 Ford Edge. It has stock rails and the tent I am looking at requires any crossbars to have a dynamic weight capacity of at least 125lbs. The manual for the Edge says the maximum recommended capacity for weight on crossbars is 100lbs. I understand there is a difference there, but I don’t understand the implications would the roof collapse or would the car tip over or what exactly is the concern?. And if I were to go rogue and ignore the 25lbs,, could the recommended crossbars attach to my stock rails or does it have to be a different setup? Thank you!

Page 226 of the 2014 Ford Edge owners manual states, "The maximum recommended load, evenly distributed on the crossbars, is 100 pounds." The tent alone could weigh more than that. I don't know for sure, but the consequences of ignoring the weight limit could be, broken cross bars, broken roof rails, roof leaks where the rails attach, compressed and dented in roof tops, broken moonroofs, and leaking moonroof. Possibly even damage to the C-pillar or a miss-fitting and leaking back hatch.

We have several crossbars available for 2014 Edge's that have the factory installed (front to back) roof rails. Each of them support 100 pounds or 125 pounds. The Malone # MPG216 bars would work for loads up to 165 pounds.

If it were me I would put the luggage on the roof and an AirBedz # 341030 air mattress in the back of the Edge.
