Can Brake Controller be Installed in 2020 Subaru Outback & Recommended Basic Controller

Question:

2020 Subaru Outback 2.5i. all local installers tell me that the subaru does not have a brake switch to hard wire a conventional controller to, but you advertise several models as being suitable for my vehicle ? someone mentioned a foot pigtail foot that plugs into the vehicle to get around this ? can you please advise how to do this instal and perhaps recommend a simple, basic controller 1500lb camper ? i am not interested in a wireless unit ~ too bulky and potentially fragile for my off road needs. i have a factory installed drawbar and 4 pin flat plug plus your 4-to-7 adapter. many thanks

You can install a brake controller on your 2020 Subaru Outback, and there is indeed a stop light switch on the vehicle. I have added a photo from a video of a brake controller install we did on a '20 Outback that shows the location of the stop light switch, which will be up under the brake pedal. I have linked the video for you below, and it talks about the stop light switch at about the 16:05 mark.

In regards to a basic brake controller, I think the best option is a time-delayed controller from Tekonsha, and for this you'll need the controller and wiring harness:

- Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller # 39523

- Brake Control Harness # 20127

This is an easy-to-use brake controller because they only require you to set the amount of braking power you want to send back to your trailer brakes. Once you do that, when you press the brakes on your Subaru, your trailer brakes will activate at the amount of power you decided on.
