Parts Needed to Add 7 Way Connector and Brake Controller to 2012 Toyota Highlander
Question:
I have a 2012 toyota highlander currently with a 4 pin connector. I need to convert it to 7 pin and add a brake controller. Can you recommend the necessary kit and brake controller? Thanks

We can absolutely help you locate the parts you're looking for. Even though you have a factory 4 way trailer connector, you will not have a factory brake controller installation plug available in the cabin of your 2012 Toyota Highlander, so any brake controller that is not wireless would need to be hard wired into the vehicle.
For this reason I recommend using the # ETBC7L, which is a 7 way plug designed for use with wireless brake controllers; if you want a wired controller you'll need the # ETBC7. Both of these are 7 way plug kits that come with all of the wiring, connectors and breakers that you'll need to give you a 7 way trailer connector on your Highlander.
For the brake controller I recommend using the Curt Echo # C51180 which is a wireless controller that is controlled by your smartphone (iOS 8.0 or newer/Android 4.4 or newer required) and provides proportional braking for your trailer. This brake controller plugs into your vehicle's 7 way connector and accepts the trailer 7 way plug, so you won't need to wire anything into the cabin of the vehicle. It's our recommended solution for vehicle's that don't have brake controller plugs under the dashboard that allow for easy installation of a brake controller.
If you wanted a wired controller then the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 would be my recommendation since it's also going to provide reliable proportional braking for your trailer in a wired controller.
I've linked some review and installation videos of these parts for you to have a look at.
