Can you life the tail gate with this rack on the vehicle?

You should not lift the tailgate with a trunk mount bike rack installed for several reasons. First, the weight of the carrier can pull the hatch down on you. Opening the hatch can affect the fit of the rack and cause it to fall off. The hinges for the hatch are not designed for the extra weight. If you need to open the rear hatch then you will need to remove the bikes and rack first.

With the Thule OutWay, # TH56BV, it is very easy to do so. I own this rack and it is simple to put on/take off. This is because it uses 2 retractable cables instead of straps that go on quick and easy.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike) I recommend using the bike adapter bar # TH982XT. This will allow you to carry the bikes more level and provide better ground clearance. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
