Troubleshooting Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller that Required Higher Settings Second Use

Question:

H have a Subaru Outback 2020. I purchased the 7 pin conversion kit you recommended and the Curt Echo. The first time I tested it with my pop up camper I had to set it to at least 80 on the output setting for it to activate enough. The next time I went camping I connected just fine, but then could only set it to 5 on the output before it started activating. Anything more that that was too much. I reset the controller and reinstalled the app. Any other suggestions? Thanks,

Is it possible the brakes on the camper are self-adjusting and were new? This is a common problem where they aren't fully adjusted so they take a higher brake controller setting but as they tighten with each application they eventually feel more and more touchy/powerful with every application so you end up needing to lower the brake controller output settings.

With the lower brake output settings do the brakes seem to react smoothly? Or do they lock up immediately? If they lock up immediately it's probably a short between the stoplight circuit and the brake output.
