Parts Needed For Adding A Brake Controller To a 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I previously installed a 2" hitch receiver and 4 pole towing connection purchased from etrailer on my 2017 Subaru Outback. I now need to upgrade to a 7-pole connection with brake controller and continuous 12 volt power to the tow vehicle. I'm wondering if the following parts will do the job, or do I need something additional? Curt Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV - 10 Gauge - C57186 Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional - RED44FR Curt Mounting Bracket for 7-Way Connector Plug - C67UR Much Thanks!

While the Curt Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # C57186 will give you everything that you are needing, I prefer the etrailer Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 for your 2017 Subaru Outback. Our trailer connection will give you a provision that will allow you plug into a 7-way or 4-way flat trailer without unhooking any wiring or using a separate adapter. And our kit will include a mounting bracket for the 7-way so you wont need to purchase the Curt Mounting Bracket # C67UR.

I do recommend the Curt No-Drill Bracket # C57202 to allow you to mount the bracket to the receiver without having to drill into your hitch or bodywork.

The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR is a great choice as it is a small and easy to use unit. With the controller being proportional it will adjust to light or severe braking automatically to make driving less of a hassle. I have linked a video below showing the brake controller being mounted with the parts that I have recommended on a 2015 Subaru Forester for you to reference as this is the closet we have to your specific vehicle.
