Is The Max Weight For Hitch Receiver Step Determined By Receiver Capacity Or Step Capacity?

Question:

My Subaru Forester has a max tongue weight on the hitch set at 176lbs, does this mean I cant step on the hitch if I exceed this weight? Or do I go off the rating of the step i.e. 300 lbs?

Helpful Expert Reply:

You should always go by the lowest weight rating, in this case, the trailer hitch receiver on your Subaru Forester. You do not want to exceed that maximum tongue weight rating. If you can provide the year of your forester then I would be happy to verify your receiver's capacity or recommend a new receiver for you to use the Tube Stainless Steel Trailer Hitch Receiver Step # CR-605.
