Brake Controller For 2018 VW Tiguan With Factory 4-Flat & Brakes For Trailer With 2,000 lb Axle

Question:

Ok so looks like I still need drums and backing plates for mounting. My trailer is a yacht club WC218. Looks like the spindles are about 1"" the rear seal looks about 1 1/4 ID. Are the baking plates sold as one or a pair? And which drum assemblies is the correct size?

We can get you set up to tow your jet ski trailer and add electric brakes, but let's go ahead and start with the brake controller for your 2018 VW Tiguan. Since the vehicle already has a factory 4-flat, you would just need to add the 7-way and wiring along with the controller.

You are on point with the wiring of your VW being finicky - that's a really good way to put it. The issue is that the brake light wire on a Tiguan is often inaccessible, or can be in different locations, if it can be found at all. So the solution here is you will need to use a wireless brake controller and install 7-way wiring that does not have to be connected to the brake light switch:

- Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180

- 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L

The Echo works due to its acceleromater, which is just a device that senses that your Tiguan is slowing down, and when this happens it sends power to your trailer's electric brakes. It is also why, when you are installing the # ETBC7L, you don't have to bother with trying to find the brake switch.

So the Echo # C51180 is absolutely the best option for your '18 Tiguan with a factory 4-flat to add a brake controller. Then in regards to the 7 inch brakes for your trailer with a 2,000 lb axle, there is unfortunately not a self-adjusting set, so you would need the manually adjusting brakes, along with the mounting hardware:

- Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # AKEBRK-2

- Mounting Hardware for 7" Brake Assemblies # BRKH7

Along with that, you will also need the Brake Adjustment Spoon # W80630.

Thanks so much for that info, and we do have exactly what you need, the hub and drums, as well as brake mounting flange (which is solid individually) for your trailer with a 2,000 lb axle. Here is exactly what you will need: - Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K Axles # AKHD-545-2-1K - Brake Mounting Flange for 1-3/4" Round Trailer Axles # 4-34 This hub and drum is even pre-greased so you don't have to worry about adding grease to the bearings, it will be ready to go when you get it.
