Can 7000lb Braking Assemblies Be Used On 5000lb Axle?

Question:

I believe I have 5k axles and wondering if I go up to the 6-7k Dexter never adjust brakes, will I get better braking with the heavier rated version?

Expert Reply:

As long as your 5000lb axle uses 12" x 2" brakes like a typical 5200-7000lb axle then the stronger 7000lb brake assemblies will fit just fine.

They will provide stronger braking, but that is not necessarily better. If you can adjust your trailer brake controller to the point that it locks up the wheels with your current brakes, you won't see any gains with the stronger brakes.

But if you cannot lock up the wheels with your current brakes, going with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7K # 23-464-465 would be a great upgrade.

I included a video of the # 23-464-465 for you to take a look at.
