1980s Starcraft Frames Trailer Suspension Solution

Question:

Hi There, I am currently restoring a 1980 Starcraft Travel Trailer. I have all components necessary to replace the suspension, with the exception of the shackles. It would appear that Starcraft used a 1/4inch offset shackle, that was perhaps made in house? They are welded together with a U-Shaped piece of steel and no bushing. They measure 3 1/8inch bolt center to center, 9/16inch holes and widen to accommodate a 1 3/4inch double eye leaf spring. The hanger is integrated...basically a slot in the trailer frame andbolts running throughthe frame rail, not a welded on bracket. I am coming up empty on a match, and am struggling to find any fab shop that wants to take on the job. I did find similar offset straps that I suppose could be welded together, but measure 4inch bolt center to center, as opposed to stock 3 1/8....Would it be advisable to change the shackle length by nearly an inch, have a spacer welded in, and call it a day? Id rather not compromise its ride or handling if I can help it...Any advice or direction you could point me would be greatly appreciated. I have attached photos for reference...thanks again!

Since that's a super unique design not supported by anything out there currently your best option might be to box the frame and then go to a more standard style of trailer suspension hanger like with the part # APT5.

Basically the hangers of this would weld to the bottom of the boxed frame giving you a way to install modern trailer suspension. This kit comes with equalizers, shackles, and bolts.
