Truck and Trailer Clearance for 2009 Ford F-150 with 5-1/2 Short Bed
Question:
How much clearance do you need between your truck and where you install the trailer hitch . The front of the box. Ford f150 2009 short box

There is not a specific distance that is required to have between the rear of the cab and the front of the box on the trailer. The 5th wheel hitch or gooseneck hitch is generally installed on the axle center line above the rear axle to distribute the weight properly on your 2009 Ford F-150.
For towing a 5th Wheel it is recommended to use the Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin # RP34FR to move your turning point back 22" allowing you better maneuverability with the trailer on a 5-1/2' short bed. Your trailer may require a different model as these are specific to different pin boxes. If you let me know what pin box you have I can help you identify the correct one.
With the sidewinder you will need the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30928 and Reese Quick-Install Custom Outboard Installation Kit # RP56006-53. This fixed 5th wheel hitch will allow you to use the sidewinder hitch with your F-150. The Installation kit will bolt through existing frame holes allowing for a faster and easier installation.
Demco also has a Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550041 that is specifically designed for the 5-1/2' short bed trucks. This will automatically slide the camper further from the truck when the vehicle turns. To complete the installation on your F-150 you will need the Underbed Rail and Installation Kit # DM8551001
