The purpose of the diode is to prevent power from surging back and damaging your wires and other components. It sounds like the diodes are wired incorrectly if you're having issues with your signals flashing rapidly and giving you an error code on the console. You could also have a short somewhere in the wire if you accidentally nicked a wire while installing the diodes so you'll want to examine your wire to ensure there is no damage.
