Trailer Brake Controller and 7-Way For a 2009 Mazda 5
Question:
I recently bought a drawtite hitcher my 2009 Mazda 5 with a 4-pin connector. I am looking to tow a light tent trailer 1600 lbs.. In California, any trailer above 1500 lbs. requires break assistance. Is there a 7-pin wiring set you can recommend that will allow me to control the trailer breaks with the aforementioned towing vehicle? Thanks

For your 2009 Mazda 5 I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This will accept the 4-way that you already have and give you the remaining wiring for installing a brake controller.
For a brake controller you have a couple options. First is a hardwired option that you get with a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. This will be mounted on your Mazda near the steering wheel for easy access by the driver. The P3 is a proportional brake control that once it is properly set will adapt to severe and light braking.
The other type is the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. This device will connect in line of the 7-way between the Mazda and Trailer. You will then be able to control the brakes via a smartphone through the Curt App. The Echo is also proportional to adapt to your braking. If you ever lose your phone the Echo will continue to function on the last setting that was used. The benefit is this device can be used on multiple vehicles and trailers without anything needed but a properly installed 7-way plug.
