Do Brake Controllers Stay On All The Time

Do the brake controller lights always stay on, even with no trailer connected? If so, is there a way to turn them off?

The Tekonsha P3, like most all brake controllers, will go into a sleep mode after 10-20 minutes of inactivity. When in the sleep mode, the controller draws a very small amount of power. The amount of draw is so insignificant that it wouldn't drain the battery unless the vehicle is left unattended for several months.

Brake controllers typically don't have an on/off switch, which is done intentionally as a safety feature. The fear is that a user would forget the controller was turned off and then tow a heavy trailer which could lead to a dangerous situation. Additionally, removing power from the controller would cause it to lose any settings you've programmed into it.

If the fact that it remains on really bothers you, you can unplug the controller from its pigtail, just don't forget to plug it back in before towing.
