Flat Towing Safety Tips for a 2017 GMC Acadia

Question:

Starting to tow a 2017 Acadia new style and my owners manual has the opening shifter boot and releasing the white lever to shift to neutral procedure. That works fine. But I realized there might be an easier way. How about just starting car in park as normal, shift to neutral, and shut it off? This works and leaves car in neutral. I havent towed it after this procedure, just wondered if this would be a bad idea ?

I highly recommend following the instructions as they are in the owner's manual as these are in place the way they are to protect your vehicle and most importantly with flat towing, your transmission. I pulled up the owner's manual for a 2017 GMC Acadia Limited and it states that you'll need to run the vehicle before towing and run it at every stopping and/or fueling point and run for the vehicle for atleast five minutes to ensure the transmission is properly lubed. The manual states that not following the exact procedures (i.e. opening the shifter boot and releasing the white lever) could result in severe damage to your transmission.
